The Real Reason SPF Is Non-Negotiable

Let’s be honest. Most of us know we should be wearing SPF every single day, but somewhere between October and March it quietly disappears from the routine. The sun feels less intense, the days are shorter, and sunscreen starts to feel like a summer thing. We get it, and we are not here to lecture you about it.

But as the days get longer and the spring sun makes its presence known again in New York, this is the moment to lock in the habit for good. SPF is the single most important step in protecting your skin from premature aging, and everything you are doing at home and in the treatment room is better protected when it is part of your morning routine every single day.

Why Does UV Exposure Matter Even Outside of Summer?

A lot of people associate sun damage with beach days and visible tans, but UV exposure is happening quietly every day, in every season, and it is responsible for up to 80 to 90 percent of visible premature aging. Fine lines, uneven tone, dark spots, loss of firmness, all of it accumulates slowly and shows up later, often years after the damage was done.

Is UV Really Present Year Round?

Yes, and this is the part most people do not realize. UVA rays, the ones that penetrate deep into the skin and break down collagen and elastin over time, are present at consistent levels all year round. They come through clouds and through windows, which means sitting at your desk in January still counts as UV exposure. UVB rays, which cause sunburn, are stronger in summer and weaker in winter, but UVA never really takes a break. This is why broad-spectrum SPF every morning, regardless of the season, is not optional.

What Does Skipping SPF Actually Cost You?

Here is the way we think about it at the atelier: not wearing SPF is quietly undoing the work you are doing every day. The collagen your facials are helping to build, the pigmentation your serums are working to fade, UV exposure slowly works against all of it. Daily SPF is what allows that progress to hold.

How Much Do You Actually Need, and Are You Applying It Correctly?

Two-finger sunscreen application technique.

.

The Two Finger Rule

The SPF number on your product is only accurate when you apply the correct amount, which for the face and neck is about a quarter teaspoon, roughly two finger lengths of sunscreen. Most people apply far less than that, and the protection drops significantly as a result. SPF 50 applied too sparingly can behave more like SPF 15. The amount is not negotiable. If that feels like too much product, it simply means you may need a lighter texture, not less sunscreen.

A Few Habits That Actually Make a Difference

Apply SPF as the last step of your morning routine, after your serum and moisturizer, before makeup. Do not skip the neck, ears, and backs of your hands, all areas that show sun damage early and are easy to forget. If you are spending time outdoors, reapply every two hours. And do not mix your SPF with your moisturizer or foundation. The formulation is designed to work as a standalone layer and mixing it dilutes the efficacy.

How Does SPF Fit Into Your Full Morning Routine?

SPF works best as part of a layered morning routine, and the order matters. Here is how we think about building it in correctly.

Why We Always Pair SPF With a Vitamin C Serum

SPF and Vitamin C are one of the most effective morning pairings we know. SPF shields the skin from UV rays externally, while Vitamin C neutralizes free radical damage caused by sun exposure, pollution, and environmental stress from within. Together they address photoaging from two directions at once, and Vitamin C also supports collagen production and helps keep tone brighter and more even over time.

Eliana and I love iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance+ for clients with sensitivity or redness, Super Serum Advance+ for antioxidant protection and glow, and GeneXC Serum for more mature skin focused on repair and radiance. Apply your Vitamin C after cleansing or toning, allow it to fully absorb, then follow with your moisturizer and finish with SPF as the final layer. That combination is doing serious work every single morning.

Makeup With SPF Is Not Enough

It is a nice bonus, but not a substitute for a dedicated sunscreen underneath. To reach the SPF level listed on your foundation or powder, you would need to apply far more than anyone realistically uses. Makeup SPF is a backup, not a strategy. Apply your sunscreen first, let it set, and then apply your makeup on top.

Which SPF Do We Recommend at JE'DERM Skin Atelier?

The best sunscreen is the one you will actually use every single day. That is genuinely our philosophy, which is why texture and feel matter just as much as the formula itself. Many people skip SPF because it feels heavy, makes them sweat, or sits on top of the skin. Those are real reasons, and finding the right match is worth the effort.

We carry two that our clients love. Circadia Light Day Broad Spectrum SPF 37 has an exceptionally light, breathable texture that can double as a moisturizer and sits invisibly under makeup, perfect for anyone who has found sunscreen too heavy or pore-clogging in the past. iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 has a medium weight, slightly creamier feel that suits drier skin beautifully and adds a layer of nourishment alongside broad spectrum protection. Both are antioxidant-rich, both are client favorites, and either one used consistently every morning will make a real difference to how your skin ages.

Your SPF Commitment Starts Now

Maybe you were not as consistent with SPF this winter as you could have been. That happens. But as the days get longer and UV exposure increases, let this be your cue to make it part of your everyday routine. SPF should be as automatic as cleansing.

When you stay consistent, it stops feeling like an extra step and simply becomes part of how you care for your skin. And once that habit is built, it carries you through every season.

At JE'DERM skin atelier, we build SPF into every homecare plan we recommend because we know how much it protects everything we are working on together. If you are unsure which formula suits your skin, come see us and we will make sure you leave with the one you will actually reach for every single morning.
